Do your IoT solutions rely on our 2G or 3G network? Now is the time to transition so you stay connected.

As the 4G and 5G rollout across Aotearoa increases momentum, it’s now time to look ahead and prepare to farewell the 3G network. By the end of March 2025, when you'll be able to access 4G everywhere you currently have 3G (or 5G, where available), we will switch off the 3G network.

This means it's time to futureproof your business and start replacing any IoT solutions currently running on 3G with newer technology. There's still plenty of time to make the move, though, and we'll be with you every step of the way.

We’re here to help

We're committed to ensuring a seamless transition and are fully dedicated to supporting your business throughout the process.

During your migration from 3G, it’s crucial not only to migrate to 4G but also explore alternative IoT network solutions that may better align with your specific needs. We can assist you in evaluating whether other IoT networks such as NB-IoT or LTE offer superior long-term suitability for your business objectives.

Frequently asked questions

When will the 3G network switch off?

The 3G network will be switched off from 31 March 2025. To ensure you stay connected, you'll need to upgrade your devices before then.

Why are you switching off the 3G network?

The 3G network uses older technology, which has been surpassed by the arrival of newer, more power-efficient technologies with far more capability, such as 4G and 5G. With a limited number of radio frequencies available to us, like many other mobile network providers worldwide, we're reallocating this resource toward the 5G network rollout and expanding our 5G coverage to more New Zealanders. To find out if 4G or 5G is already available in your area, check out our network coverage map.

How will coverage be improved when 3G switches off?

Switching off 3G will allow us to bring 5G to more people across Aotearoa. As we continue to roll out 5G, we'll repurpose the 3G spectrum to increase 5G coverage.

What other network options are available to us?

We have various network options to meet different business needs, from our 5G network to options tailored for IoT, such as CAT-M1 and NB-IoT. You can check out our network coverage throughout Aotearoa or visit our IoT Network page.

How do we use the IoT Managed Platform?

Your SIM will continue to work as usual in the IoT Managed Connectivity Platform.

The IoT Managed Connectivity Platform can assist you by allowing you to deprovision and stage connections as you work through your deployment.

What does "4G-compatible" mean?

4G-compatible refers to a device or module that can connect to the 4G network and doesn't rely on 3G for any functions.

Will our SIM cards be affected?

In most cases, you won't need a new SIM. Your old one will continue to work the same unless you change to a newer device or module that needs a smaller micro or nano SIM.

At a minimum, 4G Band 28 support will be required. Still, support of additional bands will provide better performance in specific scenarios.

For the foreseeable future, our bands include:
  • 4G Band 1 (2100Mhz)
  • 4G Band 3 (1800Mhz)
  • 4G Band 7 (2600Mhz)
  • 4G Band 28 (700Mhz)
  • 5G n78 (3500Mhz)

Will our antenna still be supported?

For a better experience, we recommend a Wideband LTE, 5G antenna that supports multiple frequencies.

To find out if you need to replace your antenna, you'll need to contact your antenna provider. Our supported LTE frequencies are LTE 700MHz (Band 28) at a minimum, and we also provide additional LTE 1800MHz (Band 3) frequency support in some areas.
